The listeriosis outbreak that has been our constant companion for almost a year now has been officially declared as over by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. Take a look at the official statement here.
Tiger Brands says it highly doubts that it will ever know the origin of the listeria bacteria at its facilities and they are focusing on the rehabilitation of their factories. Read more here
So what comes next?
So is it business as usual now that the outbreak is over? We don't think so. The industry should continue to work hard on food safety - but it also needs to work smarter!
We believe that ensuring we never experience an outbreak of this scale again means moving beyond the systems and beyond the regulations, and addressing an area that has perhaps been undervalued - the area of human behaviour - and more specifically, organisational food safety culture as a means to strengthen food safety.
